How to Cut Burlap

Burlap is a popular choice for all different kinds of crafts, but it can be a tricky material to work with. It’s important to cut it a certain way so that it won’t be uneven and unravel. If you think you can lay it out flat and just start cutting it with scissors in a straight line, think again. Just a slight cut off to either side can cause threads to start to unravel and create a mess.

What you will need:

• Burlap • Ruler • Scissors

The trick to cutting burlap with scissors is simple. Choose a thread line that you want to use as the edge of your fabric. Pull on the thread until you have pulled it all the way through, you will notice an empty channel where the thread once was.

Now  that the thread is removed grab your scissors and cut down the center of the empty channel you just made.

While cutting this way will stop the burlap from fraying, if you want to ensure no other strands come loose, sew a zig zag stitch on the raw end and this will prevent any further fraying.
